Muslim Brotherhood Statement on Massacre by Army and Police

Awful! Grieving! Highly Contemptible! But why the champions of democracy and human rights all over the world are dumb and dense? And where is knowledge, prudence, jurisdiction and jurisprudence of this honourable Sheikhul Azher and whole of the 'holy lot of scholars' there? When military commander took his seat to announce his decision of grabbing the power by deposing democratically electede president, Dr. Morsi, we saw the grand scholar of Al-Azher sitting on his side as a clear sign of his endorsement to the undemocratic and unjust step of the military chief. And when unfortunate aftermath starts appearing with arrests, rigorous imprisonments and even a big massacre of the protesters while they were praying, Sheikhul Azher secludes himself in some corner of his historical institution (اعتكف فى غرفته).

Sheikhul Azher has actually repeated the history of his predecessors. It has happened many times before in the recent history of this reputed institution. We recall the days when Col. Jamal Abdul Naser, the first out of three consistent military dictators in Egypt was in power. Al-Azher played the role of a tool in hands of Naser to crush and humiliate Muslim Brotherhood. End of 1965 was the time when Ikhwan were suffering severe trials and torments. Taufiq Aweedhah, then secretary general in the Ministry of Religious Affairs, published a 150 pages supplement of the famous religious journal ممبر الاسلام (Member Al-Islam) with the title: رأى الدين فى الاخوان الشياطين  (Religious Opinion about Brothers of Satan), and appallingly, the introductive writing of  of this supplement was by then Sheikhul Azher, late Hasan Mamon. His sleeping conscience could not see that the story embellished with falsehood was full of trumped up charges in compliance to the orders of Moscow, where Naser was on his official trip at that time. At dawn, on Monday, and just 48 hours before the start of the holy month of Ramadan, the month of fasting and worship, the police and armed forces opened fire at peaceful protesters, from behind, as they stood performing dawn prayers.
The treacherous attack used heavy barrages of tear gas and live bullets, with no regard for the sanctity of prayer or the sanctity of life, not to mention the violation of protesters’ right to demonstrate peacefully. Sources have reported over 70 deaths and over a thousand injured citizens. Numbers are likely to increase due to the fluid situation.
Moreover, when a large number of women and young people took refuge in nearby Al-Mustafa mosque, the forces laid siege to the mosque, arresting everyone who came out. (The siege is still on right now.)
This mindless, though pre-meditated massacre is a most heinous crime committed by an army commander who turned against the legitimacy, broke the Covenant he made, betrayed the oath he took, and seized power in a de facto military coup, with flimsy cover from some civilians.
This most horrendous crime only emphasizes the extent of the military commander’s brutality and bloody-mindedness and that he is determined to go ahead with his traitorous power-grab over the skulls of citizens, over the bodies of unarmed civilians.
It also shows that he does not care about the sanctity of life or the sanctity of blood. Evidently, he is following the example of Bashar Al-Assad, and wants to drive Egypt to the same fate as Syria, in order control the regime and rule from behind the scene.
This blood will be a curse on him and his aides. It will be the final nail in the coffin of his traitorous ambitions. The Egyptian people will not give up or give in to a military dictatorship again. This senseless crime will only increase the people’s determination to reclaim their right to self-determination from these usurpers and aggressors.
We say to those civilian politicians who put their hands in the hands of the coup commander: "will you continue to put your hands in his hand as it is stained with blood, and after he killed unarmed citizens, your brothers and sisters, even if they are of a different political persuasion?"
The Almighty God forbade injustice and bloodshed, and made the killing of a single soul worse than the demise of the whole world. He will exact full retribution from those cold-blood murderers.
Finally, we pray to God Almighty to accept the martyrs in His mercy and to heal the wounded and help the Egyptian people to victory over the tyrant criminals.
"Do not ever think that those who are slain in God's cause are dead; for in fact they are alive with their Lord, receiving sustenance." [Quran 3:169]
"Think not that Allah is unaware of what the wicked do." [Quran 14:42]
“Whoever kills a human being, except as punishment for murder or for causing turmoil in the land, so it shall be as if he had killed all mankind” [Quran 5:32]
