Sheukh Dr. Hasan Turabi Passed Away

    Khartoum, 5 Feb (SUNA)- Sheikh Hassan Abdullah Turabi, the Islamist and thinker, and an important figure of Islamic Movement in Africa, passed away this evening following a short illness, upon which he was taken to Royal Care Hospital in Khartoum, where he died.

    Turabi was born in Kasala Eastern Sudan in 1932. He joined the University of Khartoum1951-1955. He got his MA in law from Oxford University and his PHD from Sorbonne University in France in 1964.

    Turabi used to speak four languages: Arabic, English, French and German.

    He then joined the university of Khartoum and professor of law and subsequently the dean of the faculty of law in 1988 he was appointed Minister of Justice and then Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of the Sudan he also served as Attorney General and in 1996he was Speaker of the Sudanese Parliament.

    He was one of the founding leaders of the Islamic Mithag from in the early 1950s. He became it Secretary General in 1964

    In 1991 Turabi founded the Popular Arab and Islamic Conference which brought together representative of 45 Arab and Islamic states. He was elected the secretary general of the Congress.
    Turabi was mentor of present Sudani president but due to some serious differences they parted ways and Dr. Turabi took opposition line. Umer al-Bashir put him in jail for sometime. Despite Dr. Hasan Turabi's took an ideological line a bit pragmatic and somewhat different from that of Egyptian Brotherhood Movement, yet he was highly revered personality among all the Islamic Movements and Ikhwan also had great respect for him.
      In Pakistan, an other charismatic personality of Islamic Movements, former Ameer of Jamat Islami, late Qazi Hussain Ahmed was immensely impressed by themes and political policies of Dr. Hasan Turabi.
