There comes a time in the life of a nation when wealth takes the position of a 'god' and is worshiped. Its love goes higher than love for every thing thought to be worthy in life. All the efforts are made to grab wealth regardless of the moral values. Unfair means are adapted to earn and shady dealings to increase it. Majority of the people, particularly the upper class forsakes the conscience and shows bent on killing the justice. The lofty standards lose their importance and a state of imbalance exists as an unpalatable actuality. The society is divided in highly privileged and deprived classes. The aristocrats and the poor! The aristocrats lead in this dirty game. The rich then plot to not to let the poor raise their heads and become a challenge for them. Restlessness grows and a hidden fray surfaces. The society is shoved in an instability and then complete destruction.
The Quran tells us about the people of Madyan who were immensely plunged in corruption and fraudulently making piles of money. Pecuniary corruption had become their common culture. Allah sent His prophet Shuaib (AS) to warn them.
"And to (the people of) Madyan (We sent) their brother Shuaib. He said: "O my people! Worship Allah! You have no other Ilah (God) but Him. "Verily, a clear proof has come unto you; so give full measure and full weight and wrong not men in their things, and do not do mischief (fassad) on the earth after it has been set in order, that will be better for you, if you believe. And sit not on every road, threatening, and hindering from the Path of Allah those who believe in Him, and seeking to make it crooked. And remember when you were but few, and he multiplied you. And see what was the end of the Mufsidun. "
The Mufsidun were the very people who had invented the culture of mischief and corruption. They felt loss in following the teachings of the prophet of Allah.
"The chiefs of those who disbelieved among his (Shuaib) people said (to their people):" If you follow Shuaib, be sure then you will be the losers. "(Al-A'raf: 90)
And now in the second decade of the 21st century we, the people of Pakistan, are in the same circumstances in which Shuaib (AS) raised his call. Avarice is distinctive mark of our 'chiefs' who have chosen the politics casting their covetous eyes on national resources and an easy way to plunder more and more money with no point of contentment. They make room for them in the politics by hook and by crook. Politics is a camouflage to hide their crimes. Annaso alaa deene mulookehim. (The people generally emulate their leaders) In result of this emulation entire society is going morally messed up. Now the matter is not limited to only police, custom and revenue departments but corruption has penetrated in the veins of whole of the society. One who finds a chance of plunder does not hesitate to make avail of the chance. The evil started from the top has taken roots at the bottom also.
Our holy prophet (pbuh) is reported to have said: "Arrajalo alaa deene khalilehi, falyanzur munyukhalil." (Tirmidhi / Riazusaleheen) It means: man mostly follows the ways and manners of those whose society he keeps. Same thing is in a famous poetic saying: Jjins ba hamjins kunad parwaz, kabootar ba kabootar, baaz ba baaz. (Every type of people finds the company of its own peculiarity and taste) and an English proverb is there with the same fact: Man is known by the society he keeps. We find all the unscrupulous elements collectively getting camouflaged to hide ugliness of their faces.
The parliamentarians are thought to be a special creature having its special rights and privileges to gulp down huge of amount in the name of their heavy allowances. They are so sacred that any sign of insult to them is tantamount to a major sin. But imagine lowness of their moral level. How mean they are! Some members of the NA shamelessly admitted in the Supreme Court they got fake educational degrees just to gain this 'sacred status' of parliamentarians and to keep feather of holiness in their caps. They had to resign from their membership of the National and Provincial Assemblies. But what happened after that? Had they to face any reproach from their leaderships and were punished for their fraud? No, not at all! In stead being disdainfully rejected for their crime they are getting a celebrity treatment in their parties and have been honoured with the tickets for the same seats of the assemblies.
What does this tell us? Disregard to the moral standards and a deliberate contempt of the Supreme Court. Also a message of defiance of the traits of honesty and truthfulness same as the chiefs of Madyan gave to their people: 'If you follow the moral values of honesty and truthfulness then be sure you will be in loss.' The sententious people in our ranks are gradually getting marginalized and touchiness about moral values is little by little going dead. I am afraid the people of the constituencies of those who were elected on fake academic documents will again vote for the same fraudulent. That will be the point of senselessness where the politicians want to drive the nation. Such circumstances lead either to a positive revolution or an entire destruction.
